Note: Every article you read on this website is from direct human perspective and will never be AI generated. This is because the perspectives we have to share do not already exist on the internet, are not commonly expressed by travelers on threads or even Redditors, and most who figure out the information we are sharing are living happy, undistributed, quiet, successful lives and they don’t really share this information with others. Why? Because they’re generally happy 🙂
- Did you read the “Before You Date In Colombia” articles?
- Did you complete the financial requirement?
- Have you begun the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual preparation?

- Recommendation: Buy 2 phones and setup 2 USA phone lines before travel. There’s nothing that can hit your remote work harder than losing your USA phone and having to call back home to your contact list with a Colombian phone line they think is Spam. In Colombia, you cannot just transfer your phone line digitally to a new phone. The cell towers in the US cannot physically connect to your hardware, even if it has the appropriate IEMI. So you can’t get calls or texts to a USA number on a new phone device, unless you physically fly back to the USA with the IMEI installed. Note: When you buy your second phone, it doesn’t have to be fancy. Get an older iPhone (that still has the FindMyiPhone) and it actually will be safer and less likely to be lost/stolen than a newer model.
- Car insurance reduced and on autopay. There’s no use in paying for your normal car insurance if you’re going to be out of town for a while. Lower the premium.
- Utilities on autopay. Sometimes utilities companies don’t allow foreign access to their websites or restrict payment walls based on IP. Phone call payment options can be frustrating and add big fees for some electric, gas, or water companies.
- Rent on autopay. If you’re paying rent or mortgagee, make sure your checks are be automatically sent to your landlord or bank through your online bank account. Or, get a credit card that will automatically send the rent for you (with points) like the BILT card.
- Recommendation: Carry-On backpack. Unless your flight comes with a checked bag, if flying for a couple weeks or many months, recommendation to travel light, buy a backpack (like Slicks) and then buy a suitcase here when you add items. Why?
- Cost of a checked bag is like $80-$100 from the US on budget airlines, each way, and the same goes for flights between cities in Colombia. Each time you fly, you’re tacking on $50-$100 for a checked bag. If you’re exploring 3 cities and returning, that’s going to be $500 additional charges, just for having a checked suitcase with you.
- You’re probably going to be mind blown by the prices for things here. You’ll likely want to add clothes, shoes, or items you didn’t even know you wanted until you saw the price. Cost of buying an additional suitcase when you really need it (at the end of your travel) is about $40. Load everything in at that point. Fly back with a checked bag for $100.
- Save money (about $400 per trip, depending on how much you explore), don’t drag that thing around everywhere with you. Get what you need and buy everything else when you get here at a fraction of the price.
- Packing: Clothes, computer, phones, chargers, backup battery, critical medicine. Buy everything else here and you’ll save money and hassle.
